Porter’s Palomar

Photo ID RWP2.3-28

Russell Porter’s mechanical renderings of the 200-inch Palomar telescope are legendary. A gifted artist and amateur astronomer, Porter played a key role in the design of the telescope. This drawing, titled “The Two Hundred Inch Telescope Looking Northwest,” appears as image no. 3 in the publication, Giants of Palomar (rev. ed. 1983). Other Porter originals and copies are housed in the Caltech Archives.
