Last fall, Caltech Library produced the exhibition Crossing Over: Art and Science at Caltech, 1920–2020. The Architect’s Newspaper has recognized the outstanding design of the exhibition, by Tim Durfee Studio with graphic design by Jennifer Rider Studio, with the Honorable Mention for their 2025 Best of Design Award for Exhibition Design.
“To avoid interruption of ongoing research and teaching [and] contact with the historic buildings,” writes architect Tim Durfee, “each installation uses… ultra-thin surfaces, undulating pathways to optimize display space, and legs that barely touch the floor.… By nesting a temporary information-oriented ‘campus’ within the existing one, Crossing Over hints at a possible future for building in the AI and information age, where logics of interface merge with those of architecture to form new types of public and cultural environments.”
Durfee also wrote about his design for Crossing Over in “Exhibits A & B: Notes for an Exhibition of Science and Art,” in our book accompanying the exhibition. It is available in print from Sherman Fairchild Library, TechHub, the Caltech Store, and the Getty Museum Store, and digitally from CaltechAUTHORS.
