Arie Jan Haagen-Smit, a Dutch-born organic chemist and specialist in plant growth hormones, first linked smog to automobile emissions in Los Angeles. He identified the chemical ozone and created a test for determining the intensity of smog. He was active in implementing measures for its abatement in California and nationwide. Photo from 1956.
