Borrowing Privileges

The Caltech Library extends borrowing privileges to specific groups of users as defined below. Members of the Caltech community may register for borrowing privileges in any campus library between the hours of 8am and 5pm weekdays (Caltech community registration form). Other borrowers may register only between the hours of 8am and 5pm weekdays at the Millikan circulation desk (Other borrower registration form).

All members of the Caltech community are granted Caltech Library borrowing privileges. All individuals requesting borrowing privileges will be expected to show valid Caltech or JPL picture identification.

Privileges regarding length of loan and ability to renew and place holds will vary for each group and can be found on the borrowing details page.

Caltech Community is Defined As

• Caltech Faculty
• Caltech Trustees
• Caltech Emeritus Faculty
• Caltech Graduate Students
• Caltech Undergraduate Students
• Caltech Staff
• Caltech Peripheral Staff
• JPL regular staff
• Register for a library card between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday at Millikan or SFL.
• Caltech/JPL retired staff
• Caltech Secondary and Postsecondary Summer Program Students
• Immediate Family Members of current Caltech Faculty, Graduate Students, and Staff (14+ years of age)
• Apply at the Millikan circulation desk between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.
• Caltech Faculty Proxy Borrowers
  • Apply at the Millikan circulation desk between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Current Caltech Staff ID, personal registration, and faculty signature required.
• Current Caltech Alumni Association Members
• Contact the Alumni Association at (626) 395-6592 for information.
• Register for a library card between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday at Millikan or SFL. You must have your Caltech Alumni ID card.
• Caltech Associates
  • Apply at the Millikan circulation desk between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Contact the Caltech Associates Office at (626) 395-3919 for information.
• Caltech Earthquake Associates
  • Borrowing in Geology Library only. Contact the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at (626) 395-3298.

Other Borrowers

The Caltech Library extends borrowing privileges beyond the Caltech community on a selective basis. Individuals of the groups listed below should present identification showing their affiliation and must register for access at the Millikan Circulation Desk between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday.

• Carnegie Observatories Staff
• Faculty from UCLA and USC (requires documentation of current status)
• Faculty from Cal Poly Pomona, Claremont, Occidental College, Whittier College (Initiate application at their home library)
• Huntington Library Readers (who do not fall into another listed category)
• Polytechnic School Faculty

• USC Graduate Students (requires documentation of current status)
  • $25.00 fee for a 6 month card for borrowing privileges only (evening, weekend and holiday building access not included).
• Thirty Meter Telescope Staff

USC

Through a consortium agreement, Caltech faculty and graduate students have special access to the USC libraries.

• Caltech faculty may acquire borrowing privileges at no extra charge.
• Caltech graduate students may acquire a borrower's card for $25/six months or $50/12 months.
