Library Book & Collections Endowment receives Gift from Friends of Caltech Libraries

At its Holiday Dinner on December 6, the Friends of the Caltech Libraries presented a check for $60,000 to the Caltech Library System.

$50,000 of the gift will go toward the Library’s newly established Book and Collection Endowment Fund. This endowed fund will support the purchase of new books and otherwise expand and preserve Caltech’s library collections for the benefit of generations of students to come. In accepting the gift, Kimberly Douglas, University Librarian, described the endowment as a “legacy gift to future generations unknown that represents optimism and selflessness, without which the future of our civilization and the planet would be greatly diminished.” Undergraduate Angela Chang and grad student Andrej Svorencik also added their thanks to the Friends for their support of the Library’s projects and collections over the years.

The new Fund is a significant development for the Library because its endowment can grow with gifts of any size. Those of $10,000 or more will be added as memorials for which special bookplates will be created.

In addition to the Endowment gift, the Friends also contributed $5,000 for preservation of rare books in the Caltech Archives and $5,000 for the Library Staff Development Fund, thus bringing the total to $60,000.

Dr. Joan Wilson of the Friends of the Caltech Libraries presents check for $60,000 with Kimberly Douglas, University Librarian and undergrad, Angela Chang and graduate student, Andrej Svorencik, accepting.

New Printing Policy as of Jan. 1

New Printing Policy for Students, Faculty, and Staff
(effective January 1, 2008)

Free-printing allowance: $50 per calendar quarter

10¢ per sheet for black and white

20¢ per sheet for color

Two-sided printing (aka ‘duplex’), where supported, is at no additional cost per sheet.

Check your printing credit balance in the pop-up window that appears when you log onto library workstations with your IMSS account.

Charges exceeding the free-printing allowance will be charged to your Bursar’s account or to a PTA account at the end of the calendar quarter.

Maximum single print-job size (because of printer limitations) will be 200 pages or 100MB, whichever is less.

New policy effective: January 1st, 2008

The library strongly encourages patrons to monitor their printing allowance. Patrons should print only for themselves. If a file must be printed for each member of a group, please inform group members of the file’s network location, and let each print for himself, on his personal printing allowance.

All printing will be charged. Excessive printing may result in the library contacting patrons to ensure understanding of the policy.
