Library Book & Collections Endowment receives Gift from Friends of Caltech Libraries

At its Holiday Dinner on December 6, the Friends of the Caltech Libraries presented a check for $60,000 to the Caltech Library System.

$50,000 of the gift will go toward the Library’s newly established Book and Collection Endowment Fund. This endowed fund will support the purchase of new books and otherwise expand and preserve Caltech’s library collections for the benefit of generations of students to come. In accepting the gift, Kimberly Douglas, University Librarian, described the endowment as a “legacy gift to future generations unknown that represents optimism and selflessness, without which the future of our civilization and the planet would be greatly diminished.” Undergraduate Angela Chang and grad student Andrej Svorencik also added their thanks to the Friends for their support of the Library’s projects and collections over the years.

The new Fund is a significant development for the Library because its endowment can grow with gifts of any size. Those of $10,000 or more will be added as memorials for which special bookplates will be created.

In addition to the Endowment gift, the Friends also contributed $5,000 for preservation of rare books in the Caltech Archives and $5,000 for the Library Staff Development Fund, thus bringing the total to $60,000.
