Thanks Jennifer - I'd love to learn more about how Islandora can't deal with METS as a wrapper and suspect I'll be calling you at some point to pick your brain. I think we'll be ok with flat record structure in MODS which has elements for both work & image. My plan at this point is to use a label attribute to distinguish which fields belong with which layer of description so I can parse the metadata if/when I need to work with it in some future context. I suspect that in the long term we'll take advantage of other means of accessing the Fedora architecture like Hydra. For us, Islandora and working with consultants seemed like a good way for us to get started with Fedora but we won't be wedded to it long term if other middle layer solutions work better. And really, Islandora developers should consider a "more atomistic content model architecture" given the state of cataloging theory and best practices. The notion of parent-child records isn't new. FRBR has been around for a long time. Ditto CCO/VRA Core.

Thanks for your post Laura. I enjoyed your description of what you're doing and how you're moving beyond AACR2/RDA/MARC, DC and EAD. It's very similar to the work I'm doing at my institution. We're implementing a Fedora digital repository. We're moving away from Islandora however since our content model architecture is more atomistic. I would love to hear more on your progress.

Hi there -
Sorry for taking so long to respond. I've not had time to revisit this project in awhile.

I was working through the steps in this tutorial http://bit.ly/rDZxTZ . For context, I'm running it on WinXP 2002 SP3.

I think the problem had to do with file paths. For some reason, when we started up Refine and loaded some spreadsheet data, Refine wouldn't recognize the plugins. I had it installed on a folder on my desktop and put the extensions folder in c:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Refine. The I downloaded and put the RDF extension in \Refine\extensions. We tried putting the extensions in various file paths without success.

Today I wiped everything Refine related from my laptop and started over reinstalling the application and the RDF plug-in. I managed to open Refine and create a project by importing some Excel data. The RDF and Freebase plug-ins appeared in the top right corner without a hitch this time.

Unfortunately, when I attempted to re-open the project or create a new project the entire thing crashed. It would hang with the "working" dialog box.

So I went directly to DERI to see if there was an update to the extension. There was. The direct link provided in the tutorial was for v.0.5.3 and they're now up to v.0.7.0 . I'll play around with it and see if the new version works. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Laura, Interesting post, thanks a lot!

Could you provide some details about why you couldn't get the RDF plugin working? Some of us are not "knowledgeable programmers" (far from that) but still managed to get the thing working. I don't have the impression that it is buggy – that's just what IT people say when they can't get thing to work ;)

Laura,
Im with you on this issue. Though I am just learning about Linked data for libraries. I am thinking to myself how and who will begin this process that is real and meaningful at this time, the present? Or is this something that would not be a reality for some time. I'd hate to see the latter scenario. Libraries should be if not in the forefront, right there in the thick of use of new means and technologies, unless we want to become irrelevant as some say we are now. I fight this in a different way everyday and it's getting old. In any event linked data may not solve all of our information organization needs but it sure is something to look at and if possible use to our advantage.
