Organic Syntheses (ONLINE)

http://www.orgsyn.org/

Organic Syntheses are detailed experimental methods for the synthesis of organic compounds. In some 77 annual volumes and 9 collective volumes published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  OS joins the digital era by providing a collective version of Organic Syntheses in a fully searchable electronic format, on the Web.

Search categories (e.g. exact and substructure searches, chemical name, formula, OS reference, keywords) are listed on the search page found after the Hazard Warning.  Clicking on the preparation titles which appear as initial “hits” following a “new search”, the individual OS preparations are displayed, including the full text, structures, and illustrations. Highlighted compounds are linked to their Chemical Abstracts registry numbers and to other pages in the database where they also appear.

IMPORTANT: Before using this website, please check the System Requirements and Plugin

Downloads page and make sure that you are using a supported browser, and have downloaded and

installed the latest ChemDraw Plugin.

Methods in Organic Synthesis

http://www.rsc.org/Publishing/CurrentAwareness/index.asp

Methods in Organic Synthesis (MOS) is a monthly web alerting service, containing over 200 new graphical reaction schemes, representing the most important current developments in organic synthesis, including such topics as functional group changes, introduction of chiral centers, and enzyme/biological transformations.

MOS Database is a text searchable database that is a cumulation of the monthly issues since January 2000+.

MOS Database allows searching by: Reagent, Reaction, Reactant, Product (added index terms that are not displayed) — and bibliographic data (e.g. author, title words, etc).

The ‘help’ link on the MOS Online Search Page gives details:
http://www.rsc.org/Publishing/CurrentAwareness/MOS/MOSOnlineHelp.asp

A Source List of the key journals monitored (with abbreviations for searching) is available at:

Natural Product Updates

http://www.rsc.org/is/database/npuhome.htm

Natural Product Updates (NPU) is a monthly web alerting service, containing over 200 new graphical reaction schemes, representing the most important developments in Natural Product Chemistry.  It describes new natural products, known compounds from new sources, isolation studies, structural determinations, new properties and activities, biosynthesis and biological activities.

NPU is also a text searchable database that is a cumulation of the monthly issues since January 2000+.

NPU allows searching by: Non-plant sources,Taxonomic names, Biological activity, Compound Class and Trivial names (added index terms that
are not displayed) —and bibliographic data (e.g. author, title words, etc).

The ‘help’ link on the NPU Search Page gives details < http://www.rsc.org/CFNPU/NPUSearchPage.cfm >

SciFinder Scholar - Registry File

http://library.caltech.edu/publications/scifinder/

SciFinder Scholar provides access to journal articles and patents in CAplus that describe synthetic preparations and information on natural products.  After searching for a compound by Structure, Name, CAS Registry Number, or Molecular Formula, Click on 'Get References'. This will display a dialog box where the references can be limited to preparations (which includes both preparative reactions and extraction techniques from natural materials).

A search on Taxol, for example, retrieves over 1500 articles & patents that describe its synthesis or isolation.

SciFinder Scholar - CAS React

http://library.caltech.edu/publications/scifinder/

Another approach is to search CAS React, which is a structure-based file of organic/organometallic synthetic reactions (1840+).  Preparative reactions for specific reactants and products, either drawn or imported via CAS Registry Numbers (using paste under the edit menu), are searched by 1) clicking 'Lock All Positions' (under the Tools menu), 2) highlighting the compound with the A à B tool, 3) clicking both the 'product' radio button and OK, and 4) clicking 'Get Reactions'. Alternatively you can draw or import a single structure, designate 'product' and click 'Get Reactions'., this obviously does not put any limits on reactants.

Searching for 4-halophenol as a reactant and 4-hydroxy-6-halocoumarin as a product

currently retrieves 4 (graphical) synthetic reactions, each with a journal reference.

SyntheticPages

http://www.syntheticpages.org/

SyntheticPages is a free database of practical procedures. It is not a substitute for other chemistry databases and peer-review journal articles. It presents an individual's original laboratory experience of a practical procedure. SyntheticPages provides information that may not generally be found elsewhere, such as frequently encountered problems, trouble-shooting tips, the number of times the reaction has been carried out, scale-variation etc.
