1.  Citation Searching in Physics Journals (APS and IOP).

Citation searching is available in both APS (e.g. Physical Review and PROLA) and IOP (e.g. Journal of Physics) journals.

From an APS contents page, click on the title of an article to go to the abstract page.  This page provides a link both to "Show Articles citing this one" and from the 'References' that may provide full-text and/or abstracts in CA, INSPEC or SPIRES.

From an IOP issue contents page, click on 'abstract". 'Article Options' include links to both 'Articles citing this article' and from the 'References' that may provide full-text and/or abstracts in INSPEC, MathSciNet, NASA ADS or CA.

2.  SciFinder Scholar Update

2a.  SciFinder Scholar (CAplus) now fully INDEXED from 1907+

The CAplus file on SciFinder Scholar (SFS) has added additional indexing terms for pre-1967 references.

In 2001, bibliographic information and abstracts were added for records from 1907-1966.

Subject and substance index entries for these records are now complete. The additional index entries include:

CA General Subject Index headings

Substance Index Entries (i.e. Index names and CAS Registry Numbers, when available); and

Text-modifying phrases for the index terms.

For example, the SFS record for Linus Pauling's first published paper, "The crystal structure of molybdenite", published in JACS  (1923),  45, 1466-71 now includes the following additional index terms:

Indexing -- Section 2  (General and Physical Chemistry)

Crystal structure

    (of molybdenite)

1309-56-4, Molybdenite

    (crystal structure of)

                    a. Limit to isotopic labels, metal containing, or property availability

(e.g. compounds with BP, Density, MP, ORD or Refractive index data)

Research Topic Searching

·        'Get Related' / 'Substances' answer display now offers:

                    a. 'Get reactions', which can be limited by 'reaction roles'

(e.g. product, reactant, catalyst, solvent, etc.)

Reaction Searching

·        'Get Reactions' dialog box offers  'Additional Options'.

a. Limit reaction searches by: Patent, # of steps, publication year, and classfication (e.g. biotransformations, electrochemical, photochemical, stereoselective, etc.)

b. Answer set now can be 'Analyzed' by: catalyst, solvent, # of steps, yield, author, company, journal name, publication year, etc.

3.  New 'Chemistry' Book Lists

Monthly lists of new 'chemistry' books and special journal issues added in both the Millikan and SFL libraries are posted to the Chemistry Library Web Page.

under: BOOKS-ANNOUNCEMENTS/REVIEWS/LISTS

4.  C&E News

Caltech has access to Chemical & Engineering News ONLINE from August 1998.  Please link from the Caltech Library's OJDB

The September 8 issue of C&E News celebrated its 80th year (having begun as the News Edition of I&EC in 1923).

89 essayists, including Harry Gray (Cr) and Bob Grubbs (Ru), were recruited to write a personal exploration of their favorite element.

5.  ACS Directory of Graduate Research and DGRweb

The 2003 edition of ACS Directory of Graduate Research marks the 50th anniversary of the directory, first published in 1953.

The ACS DGR (MIL-8 QR) and DGRweb  pubs.acs.org/dgrweb/  provide information on 669 graduate programs in eight areas: chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, medicinal / pharmaceutical chemistry, polymers and materials science, toxicology, marine science, and environmental science.

The DGR contains information on degrees offered, areas of specialization, and interdisciplinary programs. It lists over 10K faculty members with biographical information, area of specialization, titles of papers published within the last two years, telephone and FAX numbers, and e-mail addresses.

6.  Biopolymers

Biopolymers  (SFL QP801.B69 B563)  provides an encyclopedia treatment of the occurrence and metabolism of biopolymers, including:

processes for biotechnological production,

isolation from organisms and modification,

material properties and technical applications in;

medicine, pharmacy, and industry.

Future perspectives are outlined.

Volume 1: Lignin, Humic Substances and Coal
Volume 2: Polyisoprenoids
Volume 3a: Polyesters I
Volume 3b: Polyesters II

7.  The Annual Reviews backfile purchase has been completed.  We now have access to the complete run of all the Annual Reviews..., published by AnnualReviews.org.  Please link from the Caltech Library's OJDB.

8.  Handbook of Aqueous Solubility Data (Yalkowsky)

MIL-8 REF  QD257.7 .H33 2003

This handbook contains approximately 16,000 aqueous solubility records for more than 4000 organic nonelectrolytes and weak electrolytes. Salts are not included. The data tables contain each compound's molecular formula, name and synonyms, molecular weight, CAS RN, melting point, and boiling point (where available). Solubility data are reported as moles per liter and grams per liter. Each record provides a five-point evaluation of the data according to temperature, purity of the solute, equilibration time and agitation, analytical method, and accuracy and/or precision. Complete reference citations are included in the 68-page reference section. There are three indices: "Molecular Formula", "Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number", and "Names and Synonyms".

This data book compliments Yalkowsky's "Solubility and Solubilization in Aqueous Media(1999)" and "Aqueous Solubility: Methods of Estimation for Organic Compounds(1992)".

9.  e-EROS Problem

New Reagents of Release … (see below), which supplement regents in the print edition, are listed separately and are not currently searchable on the e-EROS web page.  Only the reagents listed in the print edition are searchable.  The reagents in the 'New Reagents' sections are listed in alphabetical order.  I notified Leo Paquette and he is requesting the publisher (Wiley) to integrate the reagents into one list.

The e-EROS web page "Browse articles by title" currently displays …

Abbreviations and Lists

Abbrevations, Journal Acronyms, Catalyst Names, Solvent Names

List of authors of EROS entries, … authors citied in the References

A-Bru, But-Dia, Dib-Dio, Dip-K, L-M, N-Sin, Sod-Trim, Trip-Z

10.  NCBI Bookshelf and links from PubMed Abstracts

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query/Books/Help/bookover.html

Just over two years ago, the Bookshelf at NCBI was launched. There are now over 30 books on the Bookshelf and many more in the pipeline. Seminal books such as Albert’s Molecular Biology of the Cell and Stryer’s Biochemistry are available for free to all users.

One recent development are the links between PubMed and the Bookshelf. This enables the reader to effortlessly jump between PubMed title and abstract text and related material in the books.

Following a PubMed search, click on 'Links' (far right margin) and then 'Books' and words and phrases in the title and abstract text will be highlighted and 'linked' to sections in books on the Bookshelf.
